Trinity College London (TCL) is an international certification / examination board that is situated in London, England offering graded exams and diploma in music. Founded in 1877, Trinity College is an international certification board that conducts examination in more than seventy countries across the world enabling students to get certified all around the world.
In India, TCL is conducting examination for more than one hundred and twenty five years. The examination in Kolkata (Calcutta) is held twice a year, generally, in the month of July and December. Trinity College London provides international western classical music certification or examination in Piano, Synthesizer / Keyboard, Classical Guitar, Violin, Drums, Western Vocal / Singing, Theory of Music, etc.
The entire certification course is divided into 9 grades – Initial Grade being the first and then followed by Grades 1 to 8 respectively. The higher the grade the more is the difficulty. Candidates are examined under 3 categories – the music pieces being the first, the scales and arpeggios being the second and supporting tests, like sight reading, ear tests, and musical improvisations being the third.
The international examination / certification conducted by Trinity College London is out of a total marks of 100, out of which 60 is the pass mark, 75 is the mark for attaining merit rank and 87 is the mark for attaining distinction.
Northern School of Music, situated near Dumdum Railway Station, is the only music institute in North Kolkata that is authorized to provide certification / examination facility to the students from Trinity College London.
