Learning Tabla Online – Step By Step

We know the phrase ‘tabla classes online’ raises so many eyebrows out of surprise. But, don’t be. Here, we would share how you can learn tabla online step by step. Let us go further:-

  • Know About the Instrument Precisely: Before you start learning tabla, it would be helpful to learn about the instrument and how to use it properly. Tabla is made of two different wooden drums – one is small and one is large. The small drum is known as Dylan and is placed on the right side. The large one is known as Balance and is placed on the left side. Both drums create assorted sounds and play an important role in Indian classical music.
  • Identify the Right Seating Position: You must seat in the right position to play tabla. A wrong sitting position can cause stiffness in the legs, shoulders, and on your back. You should keep your body straight laying your hands down on each drum at ease.
  • Learn to Play the Instrument Properly: You need to know how to place your hands on each drum to play tabla properly. On the center (Sinai, the darker portion) of the smaller drum, you need to place the middle, ring, and little finger of the right hand gently. Keep your index finger raised a little along with resting your hand’s heel at the edge of the drum. Now, place the palm of your left hand on the larger drum so that you can cover the shahi by bending the elbow. Make sure to rest the left forearm on the edge of the drum.
  • Know How to Grip Balance: Keep your forearms rested on tablas. Then you need to lift your hands up and down while flexing your wrists to create strokes and sounds. Every stroke makes different melodious tones that are known as Bol.
  • Slowly Scale Up Rhythm Speed: Once you have mastered the art of creating Bol (sounds) without any pause or mistake; you need to focus on learning rhythms. You need to practice to increase the speed of rhythm.
  • Rehearse Assorted Sounds: Keep practicing regularly and experiment with new sounds and strokes to identify your own tabla playing style.
