The Deep Connection Of Music With Rabindranath Tagore

AdminMay 09, 2023

Rabindranath Tagore, a mystic artist, was a Bengali polymath - a renowned poet, philosopher, music composer, and Brahma Samaj leader who introduced Indian culture and tradition to the entire globe and became a voice of Indian heritage. With his work Gitanjali: Song Offerings, he became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913. Today is the birth anniversary of "Gurudev" Rabindranath Tagore, also known as 'Rabindra Jayanti'.

Tagore's words are directed at everyone, both intimately and collectively. The themes of life, death, love, separation, desire, and the fate of both individual and collectivity give an adequate common substrate for every person of every time and place, recalling mankind's shared beginnings.

When East and West Collided In Imagination - #WesternInfluences

Tagore's songs are both poetry and melody; one cannot exist without the other. Tagore freely took from all musical traditions he admired during his life. Today, we honor Rabindranath Tagore's musical journey by providing samples of diverse musical styles portrayed in Tagore songs. Many of Tagore's songs were influenced or inspired by western music. Consider Robert Burns' Auld Lang Syne, which Tagore reworked into Purano Shei Diner Kotha. Tagore didn't simply modify the music; he also preserved the substance of the song. Purano Shei Diner Kotha, like Auld Lang Syne, speaks of remembering old times and old friends.

A Journey to the Heart of Bengal - #FolkInfluences

Tagore travelled to Bangladesh (then East Bengal) in 1891 to run the family estates at Shilaidaha and Shahzadpur for ten years. He got into intimate contact with destitute peasants of his estate while living largely aboard his houseboat on the Padma River. His compassion for them opened up a whole new universe of sights, sounds, and emotions for him. These encounters added a hitherto unseen depth to his poetry, short tales, and songs.

#ClassicalInfluences of Ragas on Rabindra Sangeet

The melody is dominant in traditional Hindustani Khayal music; words are subordinate. Tagore was not drawn to pure classical music devoid of significant lyrics. He chose to arrange the lyrics to classical music. A Tagore song cannot be heard as a pure classical Raga. Poem is an essential component, and the suitable Raga is frequently used to bring out the mood of the poem.

So in each and every field of music and poetry, Rabindranath Tagore is everywhere with HIS creation. Hence HE is considered the Gurudeva of Music in Bengal. Among Bengali’s He is The GOD.

Tagore established Shantiniketan ("abode of peace"), an experimental school in rural West Bengal, in 1901, to combine the best of Indian and Western traditions. Shantiniketan evolved into Vishwa Bharati University in 1921 with the goal of expanding education beyond the bounds of the classroom, drawing some of the country's most innovative minds. Even now it is considered as the best institute to learn Rabindra Sangeet and is itself a university.
